Randy Crowder and I traveled down to New Kent County to assist with the Wheelin Sportsman hunt. The hunt is held on the Virginia Department of Forestry property which is between Williamsburg and Richmond. The Forestry Department has a first class Conference Center and also houses the hunters and the volunteers.
Our day started off on the edge of a large field. After natures own alarm clock goes off (The Crow Call) we hear a gobble across the flooded timber; due to heavy rains earlier in the week the water was still high in areas. This gobbler answers the call at least a dozen times. We had fun listening to him talk back to us, but couldn’t sweet talk him any closer. We moved to another location on the field, setup in a downed tree on the field edge, and set out decoys. We called and waited for the next 45 minutes; then we moved crossed the field to another section of woods and did some crow calls. About 40 yards in front of us a turkey crossing the old road, so we set out decoys and made calls for another 45 minutes. We closed out the last hour and half setting on the field’s edge and making soft calls in hope a tom would come looking. Randy and I had a great hunter who is a great sportsman and enjoys the outdoors as we do. We had fun all day long laugh and telling stories.
No birds were harvested this Saturday morning, but it seemed like everyone heard a bird or two gobbling, or even saw birds. All hunters and volunteers left New Kent with smiles and a great hunting memory.
I would like to thank everyone at The Virginia Department of Forestry for giving all of us permission to enjoy another great outdoor adventure.
